HSAS: Student Life
We at the High School of American Studies strongly believe that learning also takes place outside of the classroom. The High School of American Studies provides many opportunities for student enrichment.
Trips and Lectures
Clubs and Organizations
Students have gone on field trips to Twelve Angry Men on Broadway, Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts, Philadelphia, the New-York Historical Society, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, and the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site.
The highlights of the many trips that our students take culminate in the overnight trips in the spring. Freshmen classes visit the city of Boston, where they tour the city’s famous Freedom Trail, visit the John F. Kennedy Museum and Library, the neighboring town of Salem, and also the historic mill town of Lowell.
The sophomore class visits Washington DC to take in the rich historical and cultural offerings of the nation’s capital. Students last year met with Congressman Eliot Engel of New York and sat in on a session of Congress. Students have also visited the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of American History, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam War Memorial.
Our students are also given ample enrichment activities on campus. HSAS students are often invited to Lehman College functions. Students recently attended a “Junior Historian’s Forum” discussing the role of African Americans during the Civil War. Speakers that have visited the High School of American Studies include Professors James and Lois Horton, former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, and New York City Department of Education Chancellor Joel Klein.
After school, students have a wide range of activities and clubs to choose from. Academic clubs, academic honor societies, and community service clubs give students a phenomenal opportunity to pursue their interests. Academic clubs include the Student Body Government, Math Team, Model UN, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Mock Trial, and the HSAS newspaper, Common Sense. Academic honors clubs at HSAS include ARISTA and the Spanish Honor Society. Our Key Club has also provided community service throughout the city of New York and has been featured in local newspapers.
