The High School of American Studies (HSAS) is a specialized public school that emphasizes the study of American history and offers students an academic program that is both well-rounded and challenging. Through our collaboration with Lehman College, students have access to its campus library and athletic facilities, and take actual college classes and seminars in their junior and senior years. Supported by the Gilder - Lehrman Institute, students gain first-hand knowledge of the key events in American history through trips to sites and cities of historic importance and through participation in special seminars with guest speakers. With a small student body of under 400 pupils, it is possible to get the kind of individualized attention often not found in a typical large New York Ctiy school. Despite the smallness of the school, the course offerings remain diverse: the school offers advanced coursework in mathematics, science, literature, foreign languages, and the arts. In all of our endeavors, we seek to encourage in our students a love for learning and an inquisitive spirit.

Congratulations to the HSAS Model UN Team for their victory at the Lab High School Model United Nations Competition! Students competed in committees on topics ranging from a futuristic war to the illicit arms trade. The team took home 16 of the conference's 24 awards, including all 6 of the Best Delegate Awards. The Lab Conference was the second of the year, preceded by the Global Classrooms conference held at CCNY in February, where the team won the Secretary General's Award, and five of the six best delegate awards. We hope the team's winning streak continues, bringing them to the International Conference held in May at the United Nations!

This visit was capped off with an Environmental Sypmposium in which HSAS and Japanese students compared notes on topics ranging from the level of environmental awareness in our respective societies, what schools are doing to become more environmentally sustainable, and whether nuclear power remains an acceptable means of generating energy.
