HSAS: Science

Pioneers in Science

Eric Lander is founding director of the Broad Institute and director of its Genome Biology Program. As one of the principal leaders of the Human Genome Project, Eric and colleagues are using these findings to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the basis of human disease. He also sits in as co-chair of President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. He is a professor of biology at MIT and professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School. In 1990, he founded the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research. This Center became part of the newly founded Broad Institute in 2003. --taken from pioneers in science program I've attached.

During the live videoconference feed, Dr. lander answered questions from Memphis, TN and Little Silver, NJ as well as the students from NY in the audience. It was really after the videoconference that the lively discussion went on when he elected to stay with the group for almost an hour to field more questions and just converse with students. Our HSAS students really shined and ask some amazing (according to Dr. Lander) questions. He was very down to earth and his enthusiasm to be with with the students really showed. You can see in the pictures how much he loved interacting with the kids.
